Frontier Market in Plainview will only offer products from local producers

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A new border market is opening in Plainview, located at 518 Ash Ave, which will sell only fresh produce from area farmers and ranchers.

Layton Schur of Schur Cattle and Farms says he and his family’s idea is to get more fresh food from farm to fork.

“How many times have you had a fresh carrot from here in West Texas? It’s been a long time and we’re hoping some farmers will help us produce it,” Schur said.

He says it will also help growers economically, as it cuts out the middleman.

“The quality should be better, the growers should have a better opportunity to sell directly instead of nickel and dime, but have a local place to come and buy and sell,” Schur said.

Now is also the perfect time, says Schur, it’s the perfect time for local farmers to sell.

“The demand was unprecedented, people really wanted this local product again, and I think it’s better anyway,” Schur said.

The market will feature a range of produce from meat slaughtered at Plainview to vegetables in season at that time.

“Our goal is not to have sweet corn in February, but to have beets and your winter crops, your cabbage, your broccoli, your greenhouse crops in the water,” Schur said.

He wants to draw attention to the farmers in his hometown because he thinks the quality is better.

“We do such a good job here, I mean why do we have to go cross-border for vegetables to find a good product? I think here in West Texas people do such a good work to cultivate it,” Schur said.

Schur says it can be done on a smaller scale than you might think.

“You could do really good things on an acre or a quarter of an acre or even your backyard, and be a backyard gardener, and do a really good job,” Schur said.

The whole Schur family is involved. Layton’s parents and his wife all have a hand in one way or another. His parents take care of the cattle and his wife takes care of the flowers. Layton says it means the world to him that his family can do this together.

The Schur family plans to open this market on September 1. From then on, it will be open all year round from Wednesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
